Unclaimed Diamonds - Philadelphia, PA
Fresh from the cease and desist abyss from whence the infamous jewelry proprietors of the same name tried to cast them, Unclaimed Diamonds are back with their punk rock, a cabal-ish approach to the genre that could be the soundtrack for standing in a yuppie filled line at the co-op or a fun day smashing windows at your favorite union busting Starbucks. It’s all there-- the gleefully brassy vocals, the fuzzed-up angular guitar, and jagged no wave rhythms. You like to see it, but Unclaimed Diamonds (the band, silly) is shambolic noise pop at its core, a band of friends covered in basement dust, lungs choked with asbestos, mouths shocked by not-quite-grounded and taped-over mics from the community PA, still bursting with a bristling energy that oozes from the West Philadelphia neighborhoods they call home. Their sound is K Records gone haywire, or “Confusion is Sex” era Sonic Youth with all the drones cleaned up and sharpened into post-pop knives. Each track on their debut cassette, “The First Five Slabs” on State Champion Records is a clever deep-dive into the peculiarities of life in a hyper-capitalist, post-Trump dystopia, giving us a little hope, a little shine, however unclaimed.
